Certification Types
New York State requires a Masters degree to earn most certifications in order to teach in its public schools.​ The state accredits teacher preparation programs in two categories: Alternative Certification Programs and Traditional Certification Programs.
Teacher Certification Options
Alternative Certification

Provides a route for individuals that do not possess an education or teaching degree

Allows you to teach full-time with salary and full benefits while completing your certification

Examples include New York City Teaching Fellows, Teach for America

Charter networks also provide "grow your own" programs
Traditional Certification

Individuals who already earned a bachelor's degree

Coursework and field service are required before entering the classroom full time

Upon satisfactory completion of degree requirements, your college will recommend candidates to the state for certification.
